Brentford are heading to Wembley for the Championship Play-Off Final after overturning a 1-0 Semi-Final First Leg deficit to beat AFC Bournemouth 3-1 at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The Bees did it the hard way as Bournemouth took the lead in the fifth minute as a Brentford corner was cleared into the path of an unmarked Arnaut Danjuma who raced clear from his own half before slotting past David Raya.

However, Brentford equalised through an Ivan Toney penalty in the 16th minute, after Lloyd Kelly was judged to have handled the ball in the box.

Bournemouth then went a man down in the 28th minute – Bryan Mbuemo winning the ball off Chris Mepham with the former Brentford player proceeding to clip the Frenchman as he was through on goal.

The second-half saw Brentford level the tie as Vitaly Janelt’s curling strike looped over the head of Asmir Begovic and into the net.

Thomas Frank’s side continued to push forward and the breakthrough moment eventually came in the 81st minute, with substitute Marcus Forss striking home from a low cross.

Jarred Gillett (Australia) – did well in a very feisty and high-pressured game, breaking up scuffles and bringing order to the high-stakes chaos.

Atmosphere

Thomas Frank’s pre-match lap around the ground helped energise the Brentford fans, who were in incredible voice from the very first minute and in even louder voice by the end.

Verdict

Apart from the early goal, a perfect performance by Brentford, who will now go to Wembley next week and try to exorcise the demons of last season.
