Charlton Athletic fans dug deep to raise over £2,500 for the ‘London Football Unites for Ukraine’ campaign ahead of their Good Friday League One game at home to Morecambe.
Launched by London Football Scene, the campaign is urging all the Capital’s clubs, players and fans to raise as much money as possible for British-Ukrainian Aid in order to help with much needed humanitarian relief in war-torn Ukraine.
Despite going down to a disappointing 3-2 defeat, Charlton showed their class off the pitch by raising the biggest single amount for the campaign so far with a bucket collection outside the ground, carried out by volunteers from the London branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB).
On the fundraising efforts, Charlton manager Johnnie Jackson said: “It’s fantastic, I’m really pleased that we could play our part, like the club always do with initiatives and the work they do in the community.
“We’re front runners with it all and it’s brilliant that something good could come out of today’s game.”
This is the third such matchday fundraiser. Leyton Orient were the first club to answer the call and there’s another fundraising effort scheduled for Sutton United’s home game against Crawley Town on Tuesday, April 26th.
Vlodko Pawluk, chair of London AUGB, said: “As the war and disaster unfolds we have to explore all revenue streams.
“Over the next couple of weeks and months, every penny we raise will be important – especially when it comes to humanitarian aid to help the Ukrainian people in destroyed cities and towns and to help people who have become refugees in Poland and other parts of Europe.
“It’s great that football clubs, whatever level they are at, are able and willing to help us and we really appreciate the ‘London Football Unites for Ukraine’ campaign’s help.”
On Charlton’s efforts, London Football Scene’s Editor-in-Chief Blake Welton said: “I can’t thank Charlton Athletic enough as well as their Community Trust and the fans for all their support and generosity.
“Once again it’s great how so many people have come together for such a good cause – demonstrating the power of what football can do.
“As Russia’s assault on Ukraine continues, we cannot relent either and I am delighted that Sutton United have also joined the cause for the coming weeks.
