Millwall claimed a first win in five to extend their unbeaten league run to six league games with a hard fought 1-0 victory over visitors Bristol City at the Den.
The hosts started brighter but struggled to create any clear cut chances in a tight opening twenty minutes.
Meanwhile, Bristol City offered little and were fortunate to go in level at half-time as Benik Afobe went close twice in the space of ten minutes.
First George Evans’ header sent Afobe through on goal, only to be denied by Bristol City keeper Daniel Bentley before the pair linked up again with the forward’s glancing header this time denied by the post.
Afobe was also in the thick of it after the break, latching onto George Saville’s through ball and subsequently brought down in the box just past the hour mark.
After only being on the pitch for four minutes, substitute Jed Wallace stepped up to convert the resultant spot-kick, smashing it into the top corner.
There was a late chance for Billy Mitchell to double the Lions lead but his low shot was well stopped by Bentley and despite dropping deep late on, the Lions held onto a much needed win.
Key Points
Check out all the key talking points and reaction from London Football Scene below…
Key Moment
George Saville’s through ball leading to the Millwall penalty was the best pass all night and crucial to winning the three points.
Moan of the Match
The Lions need to find a way of being more clinical in front of goal. They could have had two or three more with better finishing.
Talking Point
Did Benik Afobe go down too easily under Rob Atkinson’s challenge? The home faithful won’t care either way.
Man of the Match
Shaun Hutchinson – what a difference this man makes to the Millwall back line. Absolutely pivotal in snuffing out any danger tonight.
Tweet of the Match
Referee Watch
Dean Whitestone (Northamptonshire) – a solid game from the official who got the biggest call of the game right.
Atmosphere
Rather subdued at the Den, but nothing a penalty in front of the Cold Blow Lane can’t solve.
Verdict
This could be a big win for the Lions after a run of underwhelming draws. It should have been by more and the slender scoreline highlights Millwall’s inability to finish chances, but three points is three points.
