Brentford’s automatic promotion hopes are all but over after being held to a 1-1 draw with Cardiff City at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Marcus Forss should have scored on eleven minutes as a Mads Roerslev cross found its way to the stiker just ten yards out, but his effort was straight at Cardiff keeper Alex Smithies.

Cardiff then presented Ivan Toney with a perfect opportunity to open the deadlock with the forward pouncing on a loose back-pass but Smithies was alert to the danger.

The game sparked into life in the 59th minute when a handball in the box from Ethan Pinnock gave Cardiff a penalty which was coolly dispatched by Kieffer Moore.

But Tariqe Fosu grabbed a lucky equaliser with a 30 yard effort that Smithies slipped through his hands and into his own net.

Brentford piled on the pressure in the last 20 minutes, but a lack of composure and quality let them down as they were condemned to another draw.

The result leaves Brentford in fourth and ten points off second-placed Watford with just four games left.

Key Points

Check out all the key talking points and reaction from London Football Scene below…

Key Moment

Alex Smithies’ horrible mistake gifted Brentford an equaliser to ensure they didn’t finish the game empty handed.

Moan of the Match

The Bees were, frankly, horrible in the final third, missing two golden opportunities and repeatedly wasteful when in good positions.

Talking Point

Six draws in seven games for the Bees -will this form be deflating as they edge closer to the Play-Offs?

Man of the Match

Tariqe Fosu – the only player who looked a real threat for Brentford and got a fortunate goal for his endeavour.

Tweet of the Match

Referee Watch

Darren England (South Yorkshire) – correctly awarded the penalty, overall a solid performance from the man in the middle.

Atmosphere

Brentford need their supporters back, and soon. They just don’t seem to have the drive and energy without them.

Verdict

Another poor performance from Brentford – they did not deserve a point and are lucky to be walking away with one.
