Brentford got their Premier League promotion push back on track with a comfortable 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at the Brentford Community Stadium.
The visitors sent a warning shot across Brentford’s bows as early as the fourth minute when Tom Lees headed wide after David Raya palmed Barry Bannan’s shot away.
But that was as good as it got for them with Brentford taking the lead after 23 minutes when some messy Wednesday defending failed to stop Sergi Canos’ shot deflecting off Bryan Mbeumo and into the net.
Brentford continued to press after the interval and Saman Ghoddos narrowly failed to double their lead from Cano’s excellent 54th minute through ball.
However, the Iranian did extend the Bees’ lead on 74, curling the ball into the bottom right hand corner from 20 yards out.
And Brentford sealed the win when Mads Bech Sorensen connected with a free-kick from Ghoddos’ delivery seven minutes from time, the ball limping in off the post via Owls’ keeper Joe Wildsmith’s fingertips.
The result leaves Brentford second in the table, seven points behind leaders Norwich City.
