QPR’s recent winning run came to an abrupt end with a 1-0 defeat against Derby County in a low-key encounter at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.
The hosts started sluggishly and were fortunate not to fall behind as early as the ninth minute as the unmarked Colin Kazim-Richards missed a glorious opportunity from six yards out.
QPR slowly began to grow into the game with Austin seeing a header go wide before being denied by Derby keeper Kelle Roos following an excellent Todd Kane cut back.
Although QPR started the second-half on the front foot, it was Derby who took the lead in the 56th minute through a Kazim-Richards tap-in.
Graeme Shinnie broke over the halfway line before feeding Kamil Jozwiack whose close-range strike was parried by Seny Dieng straight into the path of the forward to give Derby the lead.
The Hoops then had a penalty claim waved away for handball before Ilias Chair blazed over from 20 yards when Austin was better placed for a one-on-one opportunity with Roos.
And Roos’ late save from Yoann Barbet’s acrobatic bicycle attempt confirmed it wasn’t going to be QPR’s day who slipped below Derby in the table.
