Leyton Orient were 2-1 winners over table-topping Newport County after a second-half comeback saw them overturn Jamie Proctor’s opening goal at Brisbane Road.

Newport forward Proctor opened the scoring in the 20th minute, finishing superbly on his weaker left foot past Leyton Orient keeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

The visitors had other half-chances in the first-half but failed to take them – the best falling to Aaron Lewis who could only head straight into Vigouroux’s arms.

The O’s struggled for penetration in the opening period but were much improved after the interval and could have been level through Josh Coulson, though Nick Townsend saved well in the Newport goal.

However, Danny Johnson got the leveller in the 62nd minute when Jobi McAnuff headed down for him to prod home from close range before Johnson turned provided for Orient’s second eight minutes later.

Johnson linked up well with James Brophy with the winger controlling well and, after appearing to knock the ball onto the arm of a defender, struck a low effort past Townsend.

And although Tristan Abrahams had a late goal chalked off for offside Newport rarely threatened as Orient secured an excellent victory to move into the Play-Off places.

James Brophy – looked threatening with the ball at his feet and scored a well-taken winner.

Referee Watch

Tom Niels (West Yorkshire) – an average performance – had no major decisions to make and tried to let the game flow, though he missed a few calls.

Atmosphere

Brilliant to hear fans back at Brisbane Road and the roof sounded as though it was going to come off when the O’s scored their second.

Verdict

Newport had the better of the first 45 minutes but Ross Embleton’s side controlled the second and deserved all three points.
