Charlton Athletic have been relegated from the Championship following a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of champions Leeds United.

The Addicks barely had a sniff of the ball before the home side netted a 13th minute opener – a clearance falling to Ben White on the edge of the box who controlled on his chest and fired a fierce volley into the top right-hand corner of Dillon Phillips’ net.

Leeds’ second came in the 28th minute after some slick play with Pablo Hernandez threading a through pass to Stuart Dallas with the Northern Irishman poking home the finish.

Charlton’s first chance came in the 37th minute after a fast break following a Leeds corner – Alfie Doughty running on to an Aiden McGeady through ball to go one-on-one with Leeds keeper Illan Meslier before stroking the ball wide of the mark.

After a promising start to the second-half for Charlton, Leeds scored directly from a corner as substitute Tyler Roberts headed home from the near post to make it 3-0.

And Jamie Shackleton rounded off the scoring in the 66th minute after Ian Poveda cut the ball back to the substitute who dispatched a right-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Key Points

Check out all the key talking points and reaction from London Football Scene below…

Key Moment

If Doughty converted his one-on-one opportunity it may have breathed some much needed life into the Addicks’ survival hopes.

Moan of the Match

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer went for the win at Elland Road by putting two up front, leaving the Addicks light in midfield much to Leeds’ joy.

Talking Point

Charlton take both the fewest shots per game and concede the most shots in the division. A recipe for disaster against most teams but especially against the champions.

Man of the Match

Chuks Aneke – the forward’s chances were limited given the lack of service but whenever he got the ball, he was Charlton’s most dangerous player.

Tweet of the Match

Referee Watch

George Eltringham (County Durham) – an easy game to officiate with no yellow card brandished until the 88th minute.

Atmosphere

Even without the Elland Road crowd on such a special night, Leeds still stormed to victory to the tune of distant fireworks from outside the stadium.

Verdict

Charlton were completely outclassed by Leeds in every department and that unfortunately means the end of the Championship road for the Addicks.
