Charlton Athletic were denied a vital three points in their quest for Championship survival with a frustrating 1-1 draw at Birmingham City.
It looked like Macauley Bonne’s 58th-minute goal would see the Addicks move four points above the drop zone before Lukas Jutkiewicz struck in the third minute of added time.
Instead it means Lee Bowyer’s side have to settle for a two-point cushion above the bottom three with just two games to go.
At the top of the table, Brentford moved to within a point of the automatic promotion places after a 1-0 win over Preston at Griffin Park.
Ollie Watkins scored the only goal of the game after just four minutes and the Bees held on to maintain their flawless record since the resumption of the Championship in June.
The victory also equals a club record of eight successive league wins in the same season in what could be their penultimate match at Griffin Park, the club’s home since 1904.
Meanwhile, Millwall made it back-to-back 1-0 wins to keep their Play-Off hopes alive with a narrow victory over Blackburn Rovers at The Den.
Mason Bennett’s 20th minute strike was the difference to keep the Lions two points behind sixth-placed Cardiff City with two games to play.
Elsewhere, Fulham’s automatic promotion hopes were effectively over after the Cottagers could only manage a goalless draw against promotion rivals West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.
Grady Diangana was denied by Fulham keeper Marek Rodak in the second half before Anthony Knockaert fired a 25-yard effort against the bar for the visitors.
And finally, QPR’s stuttering end to the season continued with a 1-1 draw away to strugglers Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.
A first-half penalty from Jamie Collins gave the Hatters the lead before Dominic Ball equalised after the interval for the Hoops.
