Millwall’s Championship Play-Off hopes took a controversial blow as they were defeated 2-0 at home to Middlesbrough.
In a low quality opening half, neither side looked like scoring although Boro did have a penalty appeal waved away when Millwall’s Murray Wallace went to ground to challenge Djed Spence.
Wallace then could have seen red for an off-the-ball incident with Spence where he appeared to elbow the Middlesbrough youngster.
Millwall had their best passage of play mid-way through the second-half with both Matt Smith and Connor Mahoney forcing saves from Middlesbrough keeper Dejan Stojanovic.
And they were made to pay in the 68th minute through Britt Assombalonga after Ashley Fletcher squared to him – though Fletcher appeared to clip Jake Cooper’s heels as he ran past him to latch onto the ball.
Middlesbrough then added insult to injury late on as Ashley Fletcher converted from the penalty spot after a foul by Cooper.
