Millwall kept their slim Championship Play-Off hopes alive with a 1-0 victory over south London rivals Charlton Athletic, courtesy of Jake Cooper’s 81st minute strike.

The game looked to be heading for a stalemate before a smart piece of play from Connor Mahoney allowed him to get a shot away that Charlton keeper Dillon Phillips could only spill into the path of Cooper.

Millwall dominated the first-half but only forced two real saves from Phillips – one from a Matt Smith header and the other from Jed Wallace after a superb ball by Ryan Woods.

At the other end Macauley Bonne saw an effort saved well by Millwall stopper Bartosz Bialkowski while Tomer Hemed fired wide from close range.

Charlton grew into the game more after the interval early but again failed to exert too much pressure on Bialkowski’s goal.

And after Cooper’s late strike they threw everything at Millwall but Gary Rowett’s side stood firm to earn all three points.

Key Points

Check out all the key talking points and reaction from London Football Scene below…

Key Moment

Jake Cooper’s winner meant Millwall left The Valley with all three points to keep their 24 year unbeaten run against Charlton intact.

Moan of the Match

Millwall were again dominant in large spells but failed to create a huge number of clear-cut chances.

Talking Point

Should Millwall’s Jayson Molumby have seen red for his elbow on Charlton’s Albie Morgan?

Man of the Match

Ryan Woods – the on-loan midfielder sat in front of the back five, defending well whilst also dictating the play from a deep role.

Tweet of the Match

Referee Watch

Dean Whitestone (Northamptonshire) – poor throughout, missing a number of Millwall penalty shouts as well as appeals for potential red cards from both sides.

Atmosphere

There may have been no crowd noise played but there was no doubting either sides’ commitment for this south London derby given the vocality of those on the pitch.

Verdict

Still all to play for at both ends of the table – Millwall move to within two points of the top six whilst Charlton just three points from the drop zone.
