Charlton Athletic withstood a furious late onslaught at The Valley to claim a precious 2-1 win over Championship relegation rivals Barnsley.

First-half goals from Lyle Taylor and Andre Green had seemingly set Lee Bowyer’s side on course for a comfortable home victory.

But Cauley Woodrow pulled a goal back after 72 minutes to set-up a nervy finish but the Addicks held on.

Meanwhile, Said Benrahma scored a hat-trick to inspire fifth-placed Brentford’s 5-1 hammering of Hull at the KCOM Stadium.

The Bees were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes following Benrahma’s opening strike and a Reece Burke own goal.

Goalkeeper David Raya then gifted the Tigers a way back into the match on the half-hour mark before Ollie Watkins netted his 19th goal of the season and Benrahma completed his treble.

Brentford are now just two points behind third-placed Fulham who held off a strong Huddersfield Town fightback to win 3-2 at Craven Cottage.

The hosts had a 3-0 lead inside 32 minutes following goals from Bobby Reid, Tom Cairney and Aleksandar Mitrovic, the latter’s 19th of the season.

Emile Smith Rowe and Steve Mounie reduced the deficit before half-time but it was not enough for Town.

Elsewhere, QPR lost 1-0 at home to Bristol City with Famara Diedhiou’s strike the difference while Millwall drew 0-0 with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

In League One, AFC Wimbledon slipped down to 20th in the table with a 2-1 defeat away to Accrington Stanley.

Jordan Clark and Dion Charles gave Stanley a 2-0 lead with Joe Pigott pulling one back after the hosts had Joe Pritchard sent-off for diving.

And finally, Leyton Orient teenager Ruel Sotiriou scored twice as the O’s beat League Two’s bottom club Stevenage 3-0 at Broadhall Way.

Ousseynou Cisse also found the net as Orient jumped to 18th – 12 points above the drop zone.
