Charlton Athletic gave themselves breathing space at the bottom of the Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Barnsley at the Valley.
Lyle Taylor got the Addicks got off to the perfect start, reacting quickest to poke in Jason Pearce’s flick-on from a free-kick inside ten minutes.
However they had Dillon Phillips to thank for preserving their lead as the Charlton stopper clawed Mads Andersen’s header off the line before Aapo Halme fired the rebound off the post.
Charlton then doubled their advantage just before the interval as Pearce once again rose highest to knock the ball down for Andre Green to drill home.
The second period saw a much-improved Barnsley performance with the Tykes hitting the woodwork again through a Cauley Woodrow effort following another good Phillips save.
But Woodrow wasn’t to be denied for too long and gave Barnsley a 71st minute lifeline before the Tykes should have equalised minutes later.
First Jacob Brown hit the post before Killian Ludewig saw his rebounded effort cleared off the line as Barnsley surged forward in search of an equaliser.
It set-up a nervy six minutes of stoppage time but the Addicks held on to go four points clear of the bottom three.
