A much-changed QPR side are out of this season’s FA Cup after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at the Kiyan Prince Foundation stadium.
In an open first-half which saw chances for both sides, the visitors took the lead in the 43rd minute through Morgan Fox’s low shot from Sam Hutchinson’s quick throw-in.
QPR rallied well after the interval and had two good opportunities to equalise in quick succession – Ilias Chair striking just inches wide while an unmarked Jordan Hugill scuffed an effort a minute later.
A defensive mishap between defender Connor Masterson and keeper Joe Lumley then nearly presented Atdhe Nuhiu with a gift to seal the victory but the pair recovered to scramble the ball away.
However, Sheffield Wednesday did confirm their passage into the next round in stoppage time as Sam Winnall finished off a brilliant Owls move.
And although Nahki Wells found a quick response two minutes later, pouncing on a defensive mistake, it was ultimately too little too late for the Hoops.
Key Points
Check out all the key talking points and reaction from London Football Scene below…
Key Moment
Joe Lumley and Connor Masterson’s 78th minute defensive mix-up would have seen the outcome of the contest confirmed a lot sooner in the most embarrassing of ways.
Moan of the Match
Although QPR boss Mark Warburton urges his side to play out from the back, Lumley continually took too many unnecessary risks.
Talking Point
Did Warburton’s team selection cost QPR the tie with the in-form Nahki Wells and Bright Osayi-Samuel starting on the bench?
Man of the Match
Nahki Wells – showed his attacking credentials with his goal and will be a massive miss if, as rumoured, he is set to leave the club next week.
Tweet of the Match
Referee Watch
Keith Stroud (Hampshire) – the experienced referee had a solid performance, remaining consistent and fair throughout.
Atmosphere
The away support supplied all the noise from the very beginning in comparison to the rather subdued home fans.
Verdict
QPR will feel bitterly disappointed with the result, as in terms of creation they were arguably the better side, but were simply not clinical enough.
