Millwall progressed to the Fourth Round of the FA Cup for a fourth consecutive season with a 3-0 win over League Two side Newport County.

Matt Smith opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes as Newport failed to clear a Connor Mahoney corner, with the target man finishing well past former Lions stopper Tom King.

The visitors rallied and could have been level early in the second-half had Millwall goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski not made a superb save to deny Jamille Matt.

But it was Millwall who doubled their advantage and effectively ended the contest – Jason McCarthy’s ball into the box seeing Jon Dadi Bodvarsson fouled, with Mahoney converting the resulting penalty.

And Tom Bradshaw rounded off a professional Lions performance and safe passage to the next round by lobbing King late on following McCarthy’s cross.

Check out all the key talking points and reaction from London Football Scene below…

Key Moment

Connor Mahoney’s 64th minute penalty killed any signs of a cup shock as Newport showed signs of growing into the game.

Moan of the Match

Josh Labadie should have picked up a booking much earlier than he actually did after a series of fouls.

Talking Point

Is this the start of yet another FA Cup run for the Lions?

Man of the Match

Connor Mahoney – much more confident and positive in his play, getting on the scoresheet and delivering a number of quality crosses throughout.

Tweet of the Match

Referee Watch

Tony Harrington (Cleveland) – missed a number of obvious fouls by both sides, whilst the Lions could have had another penalty in the opening period when Mahoney went down.

Atmosphere

Newport fans travelled in good numbers given the timing of the match while the Lions supporters weren’t at their loudest in what was a low-key affair.

Verdict

The Lions will be happy to progress without picking up any injuries whilst also able to rest key men such as Jed Wallace and Shaun Williams.
