It had looked like the Lions were going to pick up their first victory since August 17 when Tom Bradshaw netted his third goal of the campaign on the hour mark.
However, they were denied thanks to Callum McManaman’s late strike and his first since netting for Wigan Athletic in November 2018.
Elsewhere, QPR fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat away to Cardiff City with Sean Morrison and Marlon Pack both getting on the scoresheet before half-time.
And substitute Callum Paterson sealed the Bluebirds’ win with a sweet strike in the 72nd minute to see the Hoops drop to 11th in the table.
Charlton Athletic also fell to defeat, only their second in the league in the past 12 months, losing 2-1 to Swansea City at the Valley.
Jonathan Leko’s snapshot gave the Addicks a second minute lead, only for the Swans to equalise through Yan Dhanda on 17 minutes.
Andre Ayew then netted the winner midway through the second period, poking in after a flick-on by Joe Rodon from a Matt Grimes corner.
And in Tuesday’s game, Fulham climbed up to fourth after cruising to a 4-1 win against 10-man Reading at the Madejski Stadium.
Tom Cairney put Fulham into an early lead before Reading midfielder John Swift was sent off for his second bookable offence.
Aleksandar Mitrovic then struck twice in three minutes to put the Londoners 3-0 up at the interval and Cairney added his second in the 68th minute before Yakou Meite scored Reading’s late consolation.
