Millwall vs QPR, Championship Preview

2 min

Millwall face QPR at The Den on Wednesday night (kick-off 7:45pm) knowing a win would drag their London rivals further into the relegation mire.

The Lions were victorious over promotion-chasers West Bromwich Albion on Saturday in arguably one of their best performances of the season.

That result would seemingly make any changes unlikely, unless Neil Harris feels there may be some tiredness in a few of the players’ legs with the quick turnaround of games.

But whether by luck or judgement, the Lions boss has stumbled on a formation that has worked over the past few games.

The tenacity and energy provided by Ryan Tunnicliffe and his deep midfield partner Ryan Leonard has allowed Ben Thompson the opportunity to play a free role behind striker Lee Gregory.

And Thompson has thrived in that role, scoring four goals since returning from a loan spell at Portsmouth in January and also tried to claim his fifth against the Baggies, with manager Neil Harris stating there was ‘no chance’
Ahmed Hegazi’s own goal could be credited to Thompson.

Nevertheless, such has been the youngster’s performances on his return from Pompey, some have called for him to be named Millwall’s Player of the Season, despite being ineligible due to his early season loan.

Saturday’s result, where Thompson was man of the match, reduced the gap between Millwall and visitors QPR to just four points with the Lions also having a game in hand on their rivals.

Dragging the managerless Hoops deeper into trouble would strengthen Millwall’s chances of staying up, with QPR especially low on confidence after a heavy defeat to league leaders Norwich City at on Saturday.

The Rs have won just one of their last seventeen Championship outings and will have to be much improved to even escape The Den with a point tomorrow night.

And with Bolton losing further ground with defeat to bottom-side Ipswich Town at the weekend, it looks like there is only one relegation spot still to avoid.

Should Millwall win, out-of-form QPR will certainly be one of the candidates for it in the coming few weeks.

Prediction: 2-0 Millwall
