A third victory in a week saw AFC Wimbledon move off the bottom of the League One table as they beat fellow strugglers Southend United at Roots Hall.

In a low-key first-half, the hosts had the best opportunity in blustery conditions as Michael Turner’s header was tipped over the bar by Dons’ keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The second period then saw Wimbledon’s Terell Thomas deny Simon Cox on the line after Stephen McLaughlin’s initial run and shot was blocked by Toby Sibbick.

However it was the Dons who opened the scoring and eventually claimed a vital win – Joe Pigott capitalising on a defensive mix-up to fire home his 13th goal of the season in the 67th minute.

The result now means AFC Wimbledon are up to 22nd in the table, just three points away from safety with eight games remaining.
