Charlton Athletic were forced to settle for a point in a frustrating 1-1 draw against 10-man Southend United at The Valley.
The Addicks dominated the opening proceedings with Mark Marshall and Tariq Fosu going closest before finding themselves behind against the run of play.
Stephen Humphrys’ 25-yard effort took a wicked deflection off Charlton’s Naby Sarr to leave Dillon Phillips stranded and give the Shrimpers a 22nd minute lead.
The visitors then found themselves down to ten men just five minutes later when Dru Yearwood went in late on Jonny Williams.
Charlton tried to make their numerical advantage count with Sarr and Krystian Bielik going closest before the break.
The second-half saw much of the same with Ben Reeves’ glancing header eventually finding a way through the stubborn Southend backline in the 59th minute.
Southend keeper Nathan Bishop then denied Bielik and Josh Parker while Michael Klass also wasted good opportunities to give the Essex side a winner late on.
The result means Charlton Athletic remain fifth in the table but are now seven points behind second-placed Barnsley.
