An injury time Karlan Grant penalty gave Charlton Athletic a narrow 1-0 victory over Accrington Stanley in an ill-tempered Valley affair.

With both sides down to ten-men, Grant stepped up to convert from the spot after Stanley’s Daniel Barlaser was adjudged to have handled in the area.

Accrington’s stifling tactics and physical approach meant first-half chances were few and far between with Luke Armstrong coming close for the visitors.

The second period was brighter with Stanley keeper Jonny Maxted saving well from a Ben Purrington header and Dillon Phillips parrying Billy Kee’s effort over the bar at the other end.

With Charlton pressing, things turned ugly when Krystian Bielik’s 81st minute goal was ruled out for a foul on Maxted by Lyle Taylor, sparking a brawl between both sets of players.

It resulted in both Maxted and Taylor sent-off before Grant converted the decisive spot-kick in the third minute of stoppage time to seal all three points for the Addicks.

Key Points

Key Moment

Dillon Phillips’ 40th minute save after having nothing to do for the majority of the first-half; Accrington could easily have caught the Addicks cold.

Charlton’s inability to come out of the blocks quickly – it was another poor first-half showing reminiscent of their last home game against Sunderland.

Talking Point

With the games coming thick and fast, just how costly could Lyle Taylor’s dismissal be?

Man of the Match

Dillon Phillips – was excellent between the sticks when called upon.

Tweet of the Match

Referee Watch

John Busby (Oxfordshire) – appeared to have a handle on the game before totally losing it at the end.

Atmosphere

As Stanley continually stifled the Addicks on the pitch, the Charlton faithful rallied them off it.

Verdict

A hard-fought victory which Charlton just about deserved but it may come at a hefty cost.
