An injury time Karlan Grant penalty gave Charlton Athletic a narrow 1-0 victory over Accrington Stanley in an ill-tempered Valley affair.
With both sides down to ten-men, Grant stepped up to convert from the spot after Stanley’s Daniel Barlaser was adjudged to have handled in the area.
Accrington’s stifling tactics and physical approach meant first-half chances were few and far between with Luke Armstrong coming close for the visitors.
The second period was brighter with Stanley keeper Jonny Maxted saving well from a Ben Purrington header and Dillon Phillips parrying Billy Kee’s effort over the bar at the other end.
With Charlton pressing, things turned ugly when Krystian Bielik’s 81st minute goal was ruled out for a foul on Maxted by Lyle Taylor, sparking a brawl between both sets of players.
It resulted in both Maxted and Taylor sent-off before Grant converted the decisive spot-kick in the third minute of stoppage time to seal all three points for the Addicks.
